Book tour, Portland TV, beer, trail mix, and more: Under The Stars update for July

'Under the Stars' author Dan White takes a humorous peek into the history of American camping in his new book. (Shmuel Thaler -- Santa Cruz Sentinel)

Hello, everyone. I hope you are taking advantage of the nice weather and having a good old time exploring the mountains, meadows, swamps, cane breaks, estuaries, dells and dales and dogwoods of America. The public lands belong to you. Take advantage. Get out those blue tarps, those panniers, and those bear kegs. And you don’t need to go far afield to experience nature. I love to explore the hinterlands of my own  town — the greenbelts, the coastal meadows, the sloughs and oak thickets. Thank you for sending me pictures of my new book, Under The Stars, hanging out in America’s campgrounds. Lately I’ve been so busy, I’ve only taken shorter camping trips to places like Napa and Big Sur. Beautiful country!

Word is still getting out about this website. Until recently, the readership demographic consisted, overwhelmingly, of my mother in law at this point. Other folks have been checking in recently, and I just wanted to say hello to you all and keep you up to date.

For one thing, I wanted you to be aware of the new Under The Stars interactive Facebook page that lets you keep up with Under The Stars events, but it also lets you upload your camping photos (including hilarious ‘throwback Thursday’ style family camping photos of yesteryear) and share your camping stories. You can access that Under The Stars page right here.

So now it is time to share a few events that are coming right up:

July 12th: This should be a fun one. I’ll be up at Haight-Ashbury, my old neighborhood, reading at the legendary Booksmith bookstore at 7:30 p.m. Beer and trail mix will be served. Can’t wait. This should be a real hoot.

Then it will be time for my tour of the Pacific Northwest.

July 14th. At 9 a.m. on this day, I will be live in the studio doing an interview about camping for KATU TV in Portland. My first live TV appearance ever. I hope you all tune in. I will ramble around Portland for a while, and then, that evening, I will be reading at Powell’s Books (Hawthorne store) at 730 pm.  That morning I will appear on TV in Portland. Details soon.

July 18th: Very happy to report that I will be speaking at the Elliott Bay Book Company this evening at 7 p.m.

All for now. Happy camping to you, and I am sure I will meet you all at some point on the book trail or around a roaring campfire.
